May 19, 2021. Miles 165 to mile 177. The rockslide, 2nd, 3rd rookie mistakes, and more climbs and freezing temps.

Wonderful sunrise to start the day at about 6:30, but it was cold and the clouds kept blowing in mist over the hills. This is the bail out option trail if you don’t want to try the rock slide. It’s at mile 168, so a 4 mile backtrack if I prove chicken. Fire damage andContinue reading “May 19, 2021. Miles 165 to mile 177. May 20, 2021. Miles 151 to 165. Crazy winds, tough climbs, and great views, and 1st rookie mistake

The Silver Pines lodge was excellent, even though the assigned me the sneaky skinny squirrel room. It was tucked way back but had hot water and was clean. Love that place To get to my room you had to walk that tiny path to the left. Lol. Two great trail angels, Barb and her husbandContinue reading “May 20, 2021. Miles 151 to 165. 5/18/21. Miles 127 to 145. Mary’s oasis, weird but great water, and a couple more medium moderate climbs.

So much green for a dessert Some of the trail is very overgrown, this a an easy part. Many brief sections are tougher. Other areas had clouds, not us. It got warm quickly today. Did sunscreen up, and tried to stay covered. This is the useless crank at Tule springs, mile 137. A short steepContinue reading “5/18/21. Miles 127 to 145. 5/17/21. Miles 109 to 127. Back on trail again. “Buses, trains, and automobiles”. More rattlers, and “Mike’s place”

Having largely healed up from my 1st adventure, and feeling just a tad wimpy for stopping early, I decided to give at least one more section of the PCT a go. Since snow conditions were excellent for San Jacinto pass, I decided to continue on from where I stopped – Warner Springs at mile 109.Continue reading “5/17/21. Miles 109 to 127. 4/18/21. The full adventure stops and hopefully mini adventures continue

After finishing Section A (109.5 miles), hitched into Idyllwild, and have decided to stop the trek. It was wonderful and I learned a lot about myself and California hiking. I will probably do a small part of the PCT through Burney Falls next weekend, and hope to do other sections this year. So sad toContinue reading “4/18/21. Day 9. April 16. I finish section A. Miles 101 to 109

The day could not have started off better. Nice sunset and a ride back to the trail from Kim (with the Montezuma valley market). Slept pretty good and hit the trail before 7:00. Hoped to reach Warner Springs by 11, if my just over 2 mph usual pace held. After a short climb and decent,Continue reading “Day 9. April 16. I finish section A. Miles 101 to 109”

Day 8. April 16. Miles 91 to 101 (Yes I made it to mile 100, the minimum goal I had set

Day 7. April 15. Miles 77 to mile91, the famous 3rd gate water trough

Checked out of the Julian gold rush hotel at 5:30 and walked a short distance in a very very heavy wind to the post office to hitch the 13 miles to Scissors crossing where my day would start again. hitching took over 40 minutes until an ex football coach named Tim took pity on meContinue reading “Day 7.
